Here’s an easy way to ensure you’re traveling at a safe, friendly distance:
§check your speed (e.g. 50 m.p.h.)
§for every 10 miles per hour you’re traveling over 30 m.p.h. (in this case 20 m.p.h. = 2) multiply this times an average car length (20 feet) – this means in this example you should have a minimum of 40 feet between you and the car in front of you at 50 m.p.h. (that’s the law and that’s a minimum – in inclement weather or heavy traffic you should allow for more room).
